For beginner students, I will usually start with the basic fundamentals of playing the instrument. This would include tone production, articulation, flexibility, scales, arpeggios, and sight reading. Once the student has become more fluent in the technique of their instrument I will start to ask them what they want to work on and improve upon. It is very refreshing to be able to see the enthusiasm and eagerness of a student in lessons. As someone who still routinely takes lessons, I know firsthand how important the relationship between teacher and student can be. I’m very passionate about fostering a friendly, open environment in which students feel comfortable learning, making mistakes, and voicing opinions. I always have the student start by developing a practice routine consisting of long tones, flexibility exercises, scales and the different tonguing attacks; single, double, legato and staccato. Next perhaps finding out what their interest are so we can pick out the appropriate materials. Prior to enrolling in a music school, I developed an unexpected interest in teaching. Assisting struggling peers brought self awareness and inevitably made me, as well as the overall group better, allowing me to understand a connection between music performance and education. I have been teaching music lessons since high school at the South Orange/Maplewood Adult School Summer Program back in 2009. I like to working with kids to encourage them to continue playing music and to build up a steady regimen of practice and self evaluation. I want to make learning music fun for my students and I want them to want to learn more and become better musicians.
