In addition to directing middle school and high school bands in the public school setting, I have also taught music appreciation (both middle and high school level), kindergarten music, and philosophy courses to college undergrads. As a result of those experiences, I built a private studio of trombone students made up of my classmates and have maintained a private studio ever since. I don't generally start with a single method book, because I believe that in individual lessons, the methods used should be tailored to fit the student. For the newest of players who may also be children, I usually begin teaching out of The Yamaha Advantage series for beginners. Once the student has demonstrated a strong understanding of the fundamentals of brass playing, I will begin introducing them to different solos, scales, and other repertoire in the hopes that they may want to perform in competition or recital.
