For beginner students I like to start away from books and notation and work on sound production and call and response. This is a way to get the ear working and to have some fun with potentially the most daunting part of learning an instrument. Once we have mastered that we move to writen notation and try to match what we have been doing without the book. When a student has progressed towards a good understanding of music notation I will encourage solo repertoire and other projects that are of interest of the students based upon a common goal we have set for our time together. With young beginner students, I start with either the Essential Elements books for wind instruments or the Faber method for piano. After basic musical skills have been developed I'll move on to more interesting solo pieces based on the interests and needs of the students. I first start with an assements of where the students skills are and their mindset. I try to findout what they want to due and what they like to due. Sometimes students dont truly know.
