I move at a very quick pace, but I have my students set their own goals. While I will select the literature for the student, I want them to feel successful when they are working with me. I want students to be confident and successful, so I will do anything in my power to help them learn good technique and practice habits. When faced with a new student I always ask them what type of music they are into and what are they interested in learning and how that type of music makes them feel. Whether you are belting out Celine Dion or delicately exploring the passion and beauty of a Schubert Art Song, 99% of the technique remains the same--the fundaments of breath support, posture, vowel shape, formants, laryngeal posture, etc. As an instructor I reinforce those fundamentals very hard from the beginning because establishing a solid technical base is paramount to healthful singing in any style.
