For piano students I highly recommend the Alfreds books for beginners. After you have some background we can work with the music of your choice, classical, jazz, pop, RnB etc. Some of my specialties include teaching people how to turn chord charts into music, how to improvise and how to use music theory to improve your understanding of music. I'm of the opinion that students desire instant feedback but also need to be frequently reminded that learning an instrument is a journey which can take a lifetime if one desires to do so. I ask a lot of leading questions so the student might be able to work out the 'whys' to go along with the 'hows'. I expect my students to work hard as they are paying to improve on their instrument. I started teaching while I was in college as a swing dance instructor. I got my first experience teaching people who had little to no experience with the art form, and I had to navigate teaching students with varying skill levels. After college I began teaching beginning students how to play both saxophone and clarinet.
