My teaching experience began as an undergraduate student 9 years ago with a private saxophone studio. I have also taught beginning to intermediate piano, clarinet, and oboe lessons. Additionally, I was recently hired as the adjunct professor for woodwind instruction at my local community college. I expect my students to practice regularly as this helps students to solidify skills and techniques taught during lessons. Fostering the interest in music into a passion within my students is the ideal teaching situation. This is why I place importance on listening to the student's goals to make decisions for certain parts of the curriculum. There are technical and theoretical skills that must be learned, but the students have some choices in materials. Passion, commitment, and love are three words that I would say accurately summarize my feelings about music and the music industry. I was raised in a music home. There were few times in my life where music wasn't a paramount. In high school I was in marching band and jazz band. I loved these experiences so much that I wanted to major in music education in college. I'm of the opinion that students desire instant feedback but also need to be frequently reminded that learning an instrument is a journey which can take a lifetime if one desires to do so. I ask a lot of leading questions so the student might be able to work out the 'whys' to go along with the 'hows'. I expect my students to work hard as they are paying to improve on their instrument. For young students, I start them in beginner books while singing fun songs that motivate them. For older students I pick method books more specific to their age, learning style, and progress while still focusing on key points of interest for the student.
