I love watching my students develop a love of playing music. It's so much fun to learn to play and perform. I encourage hard work and preparation for recitals and concerts. I teach students how to teach themselves by use of recording themselves and to learn how to ask themselves questions and observations to make maximum progress. The specific level used will be determined by the student's age. As piano students progress, I will suggest additional repertoire for solo performance and technical study. For late teen to adult students, I get to know my student's interests and musical goals to guide instruction accordingly. This helps to keep lessons engaging and fun despite age or ability level. My methodology is somewhat rare, in that I don't have a standardized set of books or resources that I require. I typically focus on fundamentals of musicianship -scales, chords, etc.- as a main focus. as for repertoire, I tend to gravitate to the great American song book/ other Jazz Standards. An emphasis on regularity and time management is essential to a student who wants to grow, so I assign realistic goals for each lesson. My lessons are most often dived into three parts: technical studies, etudes, and solos. My philosophy is fundamentals based but flexible enough to be structured around the needs of the student. I try to keep the student engaged with a variety of exercises to keep the work interesting and as fun as possible. I strive to be as positive and encouraging as possible. I don't train students to make honor bands. That's not the reason to take lessons. Instead, I try to make sure the student is developed to the point where honor bands are nearly a given. Read More
