Overview:
Passion, commitment, and love are three words that I would say accurately summarize my feelings about music and the music industry. I was raised in a music home. There were few times in my life where music wasn't a paramount. In high school I was in marching band and jazz band. I loved these experiences so much that I wanted to major in music education in college. Once I experienced the depth and breadth of musical opportunities college had to offer I fell in love with Jazz and made the change be a performance major. With this change came a new found view of the importance of practicing and listening to jazz. Even though I had shelved my aspirations to be a teacher, the love of that craft never faded. I attended Belmont University to do a masters of music in Commercial Music and reignited my love of teach through my assistantships and my Experiences helping with the direction and day to day duties of the top jazz ensemble. Since graduation, I was the director of jazz at Valor Voyager Academy, working in conjunction with Jazz Empowers, a nonprofit that installs and maintains jazz bands as an after school activity for schools with no music program. My efforts since my engagement at Valor Voyager have been centered around performing, and; though fruitful, I feel that I am at my best when I am teaching. I truly hope that I can assist any student in realizing any goal set in front of them.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching as soon as I enrolled in college. I was woodwind teacher from 2008-2010 for Dixie Heights high school marching band. In this role I was teaching in large group and one on one settings. In 2010 I was also hired to teach lessons for Boone County HS, another of the many NKY schools. In 2011 I was the visual director of Holmes High School as well as the woodwind specialist for that band. In 2012, I was the woodwind specialist and helped with the overall coordination of the music for La Salle High school in Cincinnati, Oh. This band won the MSBA Midstate Championship in Class AA. From 2013-2014 I maintained a small studio of saxophone students from many the programs I had worked with to that point. in 2015 I was a Graduate Assistant at Belmont University, I taught "overflow" lessons, non-major/secondary lessons, for my major mentor. This position also afforded me the opportunity to teach some of his course load whenever he was not available to teach. I was also one of the assistants for the top Jazz ensemble at Belmont. Most Recently, I was the Director of Jazz for Valor Voyager Academy in Nashville, TN. I taught beginning "Small Group Jazz Ensemble" to 5th and 6th Graders.
METHODS USED
My methodology is somewhat rare, in that I don't have a standardized set of books or resources that I require. I typically focus on fundamentals of musicianship -scales, chords, etc.- as a main focus. as for repertoire, I tend to gravitate to the great American song book/ other Jazz Standards. I will, if I feel the student needs it, assign etudes from various books. I also spend time developing the students ability to recognize and react to sounds that are around. I employ a lot of Transcription and analysis of other players to help each student formulate their own identity as a musician and as a soloist. In general, I work on a case by case basis to ensure that each student is being helped to grow at an optimal rate.
LESSON STYLE
I believe that there can be no growth with out a personal investment. It is my goal that each of my students develop the same love of music that I have. I believe it is important to show a genuine love a fascination in the fundamentals of playing each instrument. A love of ones craft makes the investment part easy; a student that loves it will choose music over almost anything. My lessons tend to focus on the aspects of the music that I find stimulating, with hopes that each student will eventually love what they are doing. I feel that it is important to note that not all students grow the same way, and very few grow at the same rate. Each lesson I make sure the student has a list of objectives to accomplish for the week. for the following week I will asses each objective throughout the course of the lesson. Depending in the age/experience of the student, I may occasionally have them evaluate themselves. This forces the student to be realistic about their growth and their commitment to each goal. Finally, MUSIC IS NOT A PUNISHMENT. If a student is having difficulty with a particular aspect of their development I will adjust my expectations to insure they grow through every deficiency.
