I teach students how to teach themselves by use of recording themselves and to learn how to ask themselves questions and observations to make maximum progress. I am a non traditional master's student who returned to earn a music degree in my forties. I have taken a year off from master's work to transfer to a different program. I've been fortunate enough to study or perform in master classes with some of the biggest names in the saxophone world. My primary professors have been Allen Rippe, Douglas Owens, and Mark McArthur. First, I believe it is important all students have a firm grasp on the fundamentals of the instrument, which may include some scale exercises, for example. Once we achieve a basic level, we can move along to some solo repertoire, etudes, and tunes that target a specific area to keep lessons fun and engaging, all while reaffirming subjects learned previously. Regarding jazz and improvisation, lessons will cover a broad spectrum, ranging from modal improvisation, to bebop and postmodern styles, all while focusing on harmonic functionality and individual expression. My methodology is somewhat rare, in that I don't have a standardized set of books or resources that I require. I typically focus on fundamentals of musicianship -scales, chords, etc.- as a main focus. as for repertoire, I tend to gravitate to the great American song book/ other Jazz Standards. I will, if I feel the student needs it, assign etudes from various books. I also spend time developing the students ability to recognize and react to sounds that are around. Read More
