If a student is not enrolled in a band program, I typically start with Standards of Excellence or Measures of Success methods depending on individual needs. I'm of the opinion that students desire instant feedback but also need to be frequently reminded that learning an instrument is a journey which can take a lifetime if one desires to do so. I ask a lot of leading questions so the student might be able to work out the 'whys' to go along with the 'hows'. I expect my students to work hard as they are paying to improve on their instrument. I also like to provide the student with new music every lesson. For advanced students, I like to rely on the standard clarinet repertoire for most of the lesson material, and I supplement with etudes from the clarinet repertoire as well as my own transcriptions of etudes from the violin, viola, cello, oboe, flute and bassoon repertoire and technical studies to address specific parts of the technique.
