Overview:

I am a passionate music educator who loves working with instrumental students of all ages. In 2015, I graduated from Carson-Newman University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Instrumental and Vocal Music Education. During my time there, I participated in many ensembles and was awarded with several honors for my saxophone performance abilities. During this time, I also studied the oboe as my secondary instrument. In 2018, I graduated from Kent State University with a Masters of Music degree in Music Education where I emphasized in instrumental and general music. I have also had the opportunity to perform all over the world on the alto saxophone, including Europe and Hawaii.

EXPERIENCE

My teaching experience began as an undergraduate student 9 years ago with a private saxophone studio. I have also taught beginning to intermediate piano, clarinet, and oboe lessons. Additionally, I was recently hired as the adjunct professor for woodwind instruction at my local community college. I expect my students to practice regularly as this helps students to solidify skills and techniques taught during lessons. I understand that practice time can be hard to fit into a busy schedule, which is why even 10 minutes a day will help students to get the most out of their lessons. It is very important to me that my students love their musical journey, which is why I also help students to explore various musical styles that interest them. I also highly encourage my students to attend competitions, recitals, honor events, and even composing their own original material. I am always looking to bring on new students of all ages!

METHODS USED

For beginning students enrolled in their school band program, I start with their materials required from class. If a student is not enrolled in a band program, I typically start with Standards of Excellence or Measures of Success methods depending on individual needs. I will also suggest additional methods of scale and repertoire study as students progress for solo performances. For beginning piano students, I use the Alfred Basic Piano course. The specific level used will be determined by the student's age. As piano students progress, I will suggest additional repertoire for solo performance and technical study. For late teen to adult students, I get to know my student's interests and musical goals to guide instruction accordingly. This helps to keep lessons engaging and fun despite age or ability level. For all students, I place an emphasis on aural training and sight-reading during instructional time. This establishes a well-rounded musical foundation and framework that supports students and encourages independence from myself when learning new repertoire.

LESSON STYLE

The honor and joy of my career is watching my students learn, grow, and develop a passion for music. Because of this, I tailor every lesson to fit the individual by focusing on areas that need improvement and refining areas that are proficient. I help students track this by having students keep a lesson and practice log. In the lesson log, I record student goals, progress, assignments, and feedback from the lesson. In the practice portion of the log, I ask students to record when, how long, and what they practice to encourage accountability. This also helps me to tailor instruction to the student's desires. This can simply be a spiral bound notebook or one purchased from Amazon.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
