Overview:
I am a passionate musician and music teacher who feels very strongly that for a student to learn the clarinet or saxophone, they must always also understand when and where the music comes from. I like to give my students a ver well rounded music education which includes an understanding of music theory, music history and proper performance practice. I grew up and worked as a free-lance musician in New York City for 25 years before moving to Chattanooga, TN. I moved primarily because I had an opportunity to reside in an upcoming city and develop a music studio/performance space in the heart of this up and coming city. We enjoy having the fastest internet in the country and am also developing an online studio using modern video conferencing software. Even though I primarily enjoy teaching students in the same room, where I can evaluate breath support, sound production and technique in a better way than relying on audio compression over the world wide web. My studio has 16 foot high ceilings which allow for a student to work on filling a space with sound, similar to how we must perform on stage. I worked both in the classical and popular music world while in New York and love to share my knowledge and understanding with serious minded students who have the desire to pursue music in their lives.
EXPERIENCE
I started teaching private lessons my senior year in high school. Once I went to music school, i started to refine my teaching technique, and have been teaching privately for the past 25 years. Regularity and time management is key to my student's success. I like to draw on classical repertoire outside of the standard clarinet and saxophone repertoire to allow my students a well rounded classical experience. Students who want to focus on jazz studies can also learn a great deal from studying baroque music and ornamentation, and I like to offer a broad perspective to people eager to learn.
METHODS USED
I have found that every student requires a very different approach when teaching in a private setting. And that is true of students of all levels. It's quite difficult and unproductive to try and fit every student into the same method. Younger students, beginning and intermediate, progress often has to follow a school dictated path. I can work with any method book provided by the school or recommend a method that I find appropriate for the student. I also like to provide the student with new music every lesson. For advanced students, I like to rely on the standard clarinet repertoire for most of the lesson material, and I supplement with etudes from the clarinet repertoire as well as my own transcriptions of etudes from the violin, viola, cello, oboe, flute and bassoon repertoire and technical studies to address specific parts of the technique. I emphasize an approach that is true to the performance practice of the era the composer was active. Adult students often already have an idea of where they want to be, and I tailor make the lessons to reach that goal.
LESSON STYLE
Because every student is unique, and learns and grows at at different rate, my approach to every student will be different. An emphasis on regularity and time management is essential to a student who wants to grow, so I assign realistic goals for each lesson. My lessons are most often dived into three parts: technical studies, etudes, and solos. I like to draw from music that exists outside of the clarinet and saxophone standard repertoire when I feel appropriate. For example, my jazz students have proven to benefit from the study of baroque music and ornamentation. And I often ask my bass clarinet and baritone sax students to learn etudes originally written for flute. It's always good to spread our wings and see what is possible.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
