My teaching emphasizes development of the most important fundamentals of woodwind technique. Using a wide variety of repertoire and exercises, I focus on developing a solid foundation for tone production/intonation, articulation, and digital dexterity. At the same time, I encourage students to explore repertoire and style, both for listening and for performing, to help them find the music they really love. Methods books I use to help develop technique include: Rubank for all woodwinds Deville for saxophone Klose for clarinet Moise for flute Charlie Parker Omnibook for jazz studies Repertoire for performance can include anything the student requests, as well as basic material in a variety of western and eastern styles. I have been teaching music since I was a young high school student. Over the years, I have crafted a unique and open method to teaching music that makes students feel engaged with their practice. I started my journey in middle school on the saxophone, taking my studies to the esteemed William Paterson University in New Jersey. Over my years of study there and in New York, I connected with other instruments I played such as the flute, piano, and guitar, and taught each of them along the way. Read More

For my beginner piano students, I like to use the Faber Piano Adventures books to help my students learn the basics of reading music. I then like to guide them towards a more wholistic approach to music focusing on learning harmony and melody through the use of lead sheets. This allows students to understand the structure of music so that they can learn music they like by ear and approach any style of music with an open mind and the skills to adapt. Read More

My first love is jazz, and as such I have a strong love of improvisation and aural skills, which I believe are relevant in all forms of music (even Bach improvised!). Once some fundamental skills and theoretical knowledge is ascertained, I like to build on more advanced musical skills like learning songs by ear, being able to identify certain common chord progressions, helpful tips for memorizing pieces, and learning to personalize music through expressive techniques and improvisational application where appropriate.
