I incorporate songwriting and improvisation into my lessons, as well as songs the student wants to learn. I believe all students should be encouraged to be creative, while still maintaining a strong emphasis on fundamentals, thus leading to the creation of their unique musical style. I generally tend to split the lessons up into warm up techniques, repertoire, sight reading, listening/dictation, discussing music the student likes/wants to learn, and improvisation and songwriting. In the beginning it can be quite challenging for students to use their left hand to guide the right finger to the right string to the right position on the string while simultaneously using their right hand to guide the pick to the right string and plucking it and this is all for one note! I've been teaching on and off over the past 10+ years. My first experience teaching in a professional setting was at the Royal Academy of Music in Shrewsbury Massachusetts while taking some time off from college. There are many method books available, one that I have used is "Piano Adventures" by Nancy and Randall Faber. There are many series of books now available with varied styles of music from beginning to intermediate levels such as those by Martha Mier, Robert Vandall and Christopher. Very young students and sometimes even those who are older have difficulty understanding musical notation and it is useful to teach them by rote while also improving reading skills. Read More

I set realistic goals for my students at each lesson. I like to demonstrate how to play- usually I count while the student plays, which helps with the beats. We may sing together or separate the note names or the song words. Every music phase requires different input. Students who struggle with note reading, get additional note reading and writing books. Depending on music difficulty, I prefer to learn the right hand melody first, then left hand. Read More
