I discovered my love for music at an early age. Though I started in the children’s choir at church, I began playing the piano by ear at the age of 9. Formal training is due to Morgan State University, which I am scheduled to graduate December 2019. My favorite thing about music is the power it holds and the ability to share experiences and emotions. Teaching the arts is amazing to me because it allows an opportunity to empower another to creatively share their story. Read More

Having started piano relatively late, I was always taking account of what my experience and thoughts were as I progressed forward. I am familiar with and aware of the issues that bog down a lot of beginner students (of all ages) and try to solve these issues in unconventional and exciting ways. I don't believe that performing the same exercise over and over will get you to where you want to be -- music-making is something that happens over a very long period of time but there is always something you can do on the short term that will prove to be rewarding and musically stimulating. I have started teaching shortly before college, and have a proven track record of working as an independent instructor and part of teaching collectives. I am a member in good standing with both MTNA and MSMTA, and have been consistently teaching students out of my home studio for the past 15 years. With younger students, I prefer emphasizing habit formation, such as setting a practice schedule, regularly committing to a set amount of practicing time, and develop a passion for the piano. I don't use a single method for all my students; rather, I assess their needs and then choose or create a method. I do, however, always start students in a lesson book series. I typically Faber's Piano Adventures or Adult beginner books, although I have also used the American Popular Piano lesson series. I also create technique exercises (scales, arpeggios, etc.) for students each week. As the student progresses through the lesson series, I begin to add solo repertoire and to encourage memorization. Instruments: Piano Trumpet Trombone Euphonium French Horn
I use many different learning materials, depending on the student, instrument, and musical goal. Alfred lesson book series for piano, Arban's method book for brass players, Standard of Excellence for many woodwind players, and additional material for additional student learning. I also teach piano and I encourage every student to supplement their music experience with piano lessons. I also encourage every student to participate in recording some part of their musical expression. recording etudes, solos, and ensembles. Read More
