It is good to learn from books, but also important to vet information that is not necessarily needed or already soundly in their techniques. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonards Essential Elements book, as well a basic understanding of music. Once the student has progressed to have a nice grasp of the fundamentals of music, I usually begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. I use a variety of methods and tries to match the method to the personality of the student.  Some of my favorite beginning methods are Faber & Faber, the Music Tree and Bastien. I try to get the student into actual repertoire as quickly as possible and like to use familiar folk tunes as a gateway to more traditional classical music. I have been heavily involved with this choir for a total of 5 years, and I was appointed as Section Leader for the Sopranos for one term, which meant hard work and dedication almost paid off back then. I've also taught a 19-year-old for a short period of time.
