I hold two degrees in music from Montclair State College, a BA and an MA in music. My primary instrument was piano and my secondary was violin. I studied piano with Murray Present, pupil of Josef and Rosinna Lhevinne at Julliard, working with him for both degrees and thereafter. I do believe in the fundamentals of music and ultimately, no matter what you hear, learning music is not re-inventing the wheel. There is technique, reading music and understanding the basics of how the particular instrument works. I like the Essential Elements for Guitar or bass for guitarists and bassists and Alfred's Piano method books. Ted Reed's Guide to Syncopation is a good drum book. Ultimately I like to get the know the student as much as I can as soon as I can so I can help them get to what they want as soon as possible with a few laughs along the way. Read More

I subscribe to the Faber and Faber Method, Suzuki Method and Bastien Classical Series for beginning students. The repertoire is supplemented with technical and sight reading exercises. I especially subsribe to the Hanon Exercises which are a great tool for building finger strength, dexterity and technical mastery. I expect my students to have a firm understanding of a variety of scales and chords (considered to be the building blocks of music) for which I subscribe to the Guild Musicianship Book as a good starting point.
