With young beginner string students, I typically will start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. After a few weeks of that, the student will have grasped the fundamentals. and then I will introduce the Suzuki method, supplementing with the O'Connor Method. For piano I generally will start with the Suzuki method and supplement with any songs the student is interested in learning. For Adults I try to find out what style of music the student is interested in, and how much experience they have and structure my lessons accordingly to keep the student engaged and ensure they are having fun! I typically start each student off on a series of lesson books to help structure their learning in an academic way. However, I highly encourage bringing in classical pieces and students picking pieces of their own and bringing them to me to go over and learn. I’ve found that this keeps the students highly motivated and passionate about their lessons and practice. For beginners, the books are highly recommended, but for more advanced students who have finished the books, we begin classical technique exercises meant to help with the increasing level of difficulty of their songs.
