I believe in teaching music that the student wants to learn, whether that's the latest pop song or basic music theory which can be applied to any style. For my piano students, I prefer Alfred's piano curriculum. For my guitar students, I use Hal Leanord books. For my voice students, we work on whatever songs they want to learn or have assigned to them for a performance. For flute, I like Rubank method, but am open to other preferred methods as well. I began teaching back in my sophomore year of high school when one of my friends wanted to learn how to play the piano. I gave them half hour lessons once a week and tailored my teaching to fit what techniques they wanted to learn. After that, I began branching out and teaching other friends, and eventually found myself helping out the middle school bands during my study hall. Now that I am in college, my own playing has improved and I have found new ways to connect and teach students whether that be in person, or by using technology such as skype. Read More

In my time as an instructor, I have not used any particular method book in my lessons. I will buy a notebook for each student where all important information from the lesson will be recorded. I write charts and exercises myself using tablature or standard notion depending on the student. As music being such a cumulative concept, I like to not only focus on pedagogy, but music theory and aural skills as well. Read More

My teaching experience dates back to my high school days, as I began teaching private lessons. I have been consistently teaching piano students in my home studio for the last 5 years. I use practice incentives to encourage regular practice as it helps students progress. My studio hosts a yearly recital where students can showcase their talent for family and friends. I incorporate music theory and history into each leason as well as composition. Read More

I like to begin all my students on a combination of technical studies and enjoyable/familiar melodies. This will help them learn the fundamentals in a rewarding way, because as they progress they will continue to learn new songs week after week. This is much more rewarding than checking of series of technical exercises. Additionally it is important to have both small goals to achieve each week and large goals to achieve over a number of months, so my students can be aware and proud of their progress over time.
