I started teaching at the young age of 16 back in my hometown up in New York. I enjoyed it thoroughly and have been teaching privately ever since. I currently teach 7 students on weekends and three during the week. I enjoy teaching and care about my students. This year I am teaching Strings in public schools and am enjoying it very much. My students learn Music History, Theory, and Performance while in class. Read More

I always approach teaching on an individual basis. I find out what the student loves about music, and what made him or her want to learn in the first place. We set realistic goals for pace and have fun. I often mix traditional work with fun work. For example, alongside conventional ways to learn melody and harmony, I'll tie those lessons into specific songs or pieces of music that the student likes, to show the relevance of the material and the importance it has, at the same time keeping the student interested. Not only will I teach you how to play piano . . . I will teach you how to read and play printed music. Learning to "play by ear" only teaches you how to play a few songs . . . learning to read music opens the door to a vast library of printed piano music! In addition to your method book, we will work on technique (finger exercises for strength and flexibility), theory (what makes music work), and repertoire (performance pieces). Read More

I pride myself on catering to each individuals need and desire. I do give every student the same basic foundation, but after the foundation is set, the continued direction is entirely up to the student [parent]. In previous years, I've had students who wanted to be the next Beyonce, some who need better technique, and some who just wanted to build upon what they already had. Whatever the student's desire, it's my job, and my pleasure to see that it comes to fruition. Read More

For beginners with voice, I teach students about the voice and how to sing healthily. It is very important to learn how your body works and how to sing properly without damaging your voice. Next, we will practice vocal exercise to teach you proper technique. We will the move on to learning repertoire that is age-appropriate. We can sing repertoire of any genre or style- your choice! As we continue, you'll learn and expand your repertoire and learn how to sing properly, prepare for auditions, perform, and be confident on stage. Read More

For beginning folk/pop guitar students I use the Hal Leonard Guitar Method. For Classical guitar I use a combination of various resources, including Segovia scales, Sor studies, Guilianni right-hand studies and Frederick Noad method books. I definitely encourage students to work towards performance of the music they are working on, and try to schedule recital/performance opportunities as students deveope and gain mastery over their material. I always try to maintain a healthy balance between keeping the student working on music that challenges them, and advances their technique, with the need to have fun and enjoy the playing of a musical instrument as a means of entertainment and relaxation.
