My general course of action for students is to teach the essentials through the Faber book series. As well as learn songs and do theory/aural exercises from the Faber books, I like to use online music theory games for my students to practice skills like note identification. I give each student the freedom to learn and prove to themselves just how wonderful they can be. This seems to progress at a very suitable speed, comfortable yet still challenging, and has proved to be quite effective in getting basics down. Students progress through Bastien, and Burgmuller, before moving on to graduated solo repertoire.
