I love seeing my students' pride as they are successful in music. With the student, I work to establish short- and long-term goals and I try to provide incentive for meeting these goals. I have a prize box from which the student can pick something (Small candies, pencils, pens, stickers, bubbles, etc.) when they achieve a short-term goal (i.e. learn 5 songs in February, or something similar). Techniques used are as follows: Piano/Keyboard, basic knowledge of scales, note identifcation and correct finger positioning and usgae. Drum instruction includes learning the 26 standard drum rudiments. A must to learn proper drum playing, whether on snare drum, drumset or even axulliary perucssion instruments. When i start a beginner student, i like to use either Essential Elements or Suzuki for violin and cello. For piano, i like to use the Faber method books. As the student progresses with either instrument, I try to encourage them to continue with scales and to move up in their playing abilities and music reading. I am very much a goal-oriented and visual person, so I like to set clear goals for my students. I like to get to know my students personally and create a more open relationship. Some students learn much quicker than others and that is okay! But, I do always encourage my students to progress using proper techniques to prevent burnout and any injuries. I use the Alfred Piano series for most of my piano students. Woodwind students will use either Rubank or Hal Leonard series of books. During the first lesson, I will clarify the student's goals and needs and choose a book accordingly. I also add finger warm-ups and breathing exercises. Students are encouraged to pick a song from their own choosing to learn as a "fun-song". I try to cover these three things in every lesson, however I am flexible to meet the goals of my students. My professional motto is that I will do "Whatever it takes" for my students to succeed. I am an educator and musician with many vast and varied experiences in the field, from performing as a drummer in popular music groups, to instructing students individually and in groups from the time I was 16 years old. I began my college studies at Eastern Michigan University, becoming a member of the United States Military Academy Band at West Point after my junior year.
