I started teaching at a small music store in Hollywood, Florida called The Banjo Shop. As the store specialized in Bluegrass music, I was hired to teach students the pop and rock songs being played at that time. I taught there for three years before relocating to North East Ohio. After taking some years off to raise a family I started teaching at GitterPicker String Factory in Twinsburg in 2005. I belive music is the universal language. It doesnt matter what type of music you play, the theory is all the same. When you learn a song, the theory should be learned as well. I like to give scales and a practical theory lesson each week, then transcribe a song for the student to learn that relates to the weeks lesson. Then at the end of each week's lesson, we will practice impovisation with the scales, theory and song learned from the week before. Read More

To me, it is most important that a student feels successful in what they have accomplished each lesson. Every student progresses at their own rate and it's important to give students attainable short-term goals in the service of long-term achievements. It is also important to know what drives each student and understand why they want to take private lessons. This will give the student a degree of inspiration which us as teachers can use to help them stay focused and interested in continuing with their studies. Read More
