I believe in tailoring music lessons to the individual students needs. This usually involves speaking with the student in the first lesson/lessons to find out what specifically they want to learn or improve. Once I've figured this out, I begin to find repertoire or create exercises that challenge this student in the respective area of focus. For beginning students on instruments, I begin with a method book, usually Hal Leonard Essential Elements for Guitar and Ukulele, and Piano Discoveries for young beginning pianists, and Piano Adventures for older beginning pianists. I have been a part of the Hazleton Liberty Band (which has roots tracing back to the Civil War) and church groups since high school. In college, I was a part of smal woodwind chamber ensembles, concert band, choirs, marching band, big bands, and small jazz ensembles. I continue to stay active in many diverse musical groups. Also, because of theory lessons, they are also encouraged to read music on their own and learn songs independently. My lessons are designed from day 1 to include Music Theory because I believe that theory of a subject is very important in comprehension of reading a musical piece and recognizing all the signs, symbols, terms etc in the music while learning to read and play it on the instrument. I provide the Theory worksheets or a theory workbook is purchased and used by the student based on level of study. 30 mins of the lesson is spent on teaching, learning and attempting exercises on worksheets.
