Part of this involves asking vital questions and assessing each student's innate musicality before proceeding with materials. Piano: For beginning students who are children, i typically start with Alfred's Basic Piano Methods. Once students have developed the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in. I will then guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun no matter their ability level. Voice: For beginning students, I will explore the voice types (Soprano, Mezzo Soprano, Tenor, Baritone, Bass) by learning vocal scales in order to determine the repertoire appropriate for each individual student. For young, beginning and novice students, I believe that it is important to find and instill a love of music before diving too deeply into the fundamentals. Music is a beautiful thing, but it can be overwhelmingly complex at the same time. I will only take on students who show a genuine interest in music, and from there I like to cultivate that interest. I began teaching a few beginner-level students during my first few years of college, and I have taught at the Bach to Rock music schools, and found that I enjoyed building new musicians. I like to emphasize the benefits of consistent, focused practice, especially to my beginner students, as well as the importance of proper warm-up activities. While I believe that music students should learn what they can of the vast and beautiful classical repertoire, it is also important that they are given the opportunity to learn songs and pieces that are important or interesting to them. For all students I strongly encourage an appropriate level to begin with. I am very familiar and prefer to teach with the James Bastien series. This series come with the appropriate assigned age level. There are four books with each level. A technic, theory, performance, and Piano. While progressing through that level I mix in to teach Major, Minor, harmonic minor, and melodic minor scales for theory and fundamentals.
