I'm a passionate and motivated instructor who loves working with students and sharing my love of music and providing the best music education. I graduated with a BS in Music Ed and enrolled in many piano pedagogy classes. I have taught music education in Harford and Baltimore County Schools and taught band and orchestral instruments. M performances have included concertos, 4 hand music and chamber music. I attend BSO and Schriver Hall concerts and very active with the Music Teachers National Convention I like to improve my teaching and performing techniques and currently am coached by the BSO pianist Lura Johnson who also teaches at Peabody Conservator of Music.
I've also found that a combination of classical and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoy the piano and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. If a student isn't having fun in their lessons, then I'm not doing my job! My students are encouraged to enter competitions and recitals, as well as work on composing their own original material, so they can feel good about their accomplishments and stay motivated to learn. I'm always looking to bring on new students of all ages! I customize my lessons to fit the needs of the student and their age and experience level. I want the student to progress each lesson. My manta is "progress not perfection" and have fun.
I start elementary students with learning about the piano, its history and show them the internal parts. We learn finger numbers and our first songs are using those finger numbers to encourage the correct hand position and strengthen our fingers. I build rapport with the student and introduce pieces I feel they would enjoy playing . I use djembe drums to help keep the beat steady and improve listening skills. Each student is different so a "one size fits all" book is not used. With young students I feel it is important that lessons include the parents student and myself.
I first want to get to know the parent's expectations and their goals for student lessons. I want the student to look forward to their lesson and end the lesson knowing what to work on and how to progress. The student leaves the lessons with a smile on their face. I want the student to enjoy the lesson and I use games to reinforce concepts - "off the bench" lessons I call the games. I want to give the student the best education I know how to give which includes techniques, theory, sight reading, ear training, and repertoire.
