Piano Lessons in Fredericksburg, VA

Instruments: Piano Voice

For young beginner piano students, I keep the number of books to a minimum so lessons dont become too overwhelming, and in order to help them stay organized. I often recommend the first Alfred All-inOne book, plus a Just the Facts music theory book which students love because there are fun games and activities at the end of each lesson. Once the student has learned enough fundamentals, I will recommend other books and provide supplemental material. Read More

I love to teach! Having been a music instructor for over 5 years now and performing since I was 5 years old, I have learned many techniques to keep a student excited and engaged in the learning process. Practice is key! So, for my younger students, I like for them to create practice logs for themselves and personal goals, which I check weekly. This helps to make them better musicians, as well as, teaching them responsibility, accountability, and a strong work ethic. Read More

For the beginner, I would start the child on the Alfred Series Level 1. Children 5 - 7 would have the Mozart series from Level 1-4. older children would be studying Alfred Piano Lesson 1, Solo 1, Theory 1, Hymns 1 and Technic 1. As they move forward, they would advance to the next level upon completion of the previous level. They would be introduced to Repertoire, Recital and Praise Hymns. They would learn how to play their chords and apply their dynamics. Read More

For beginning piano students I recommend Alfred, John Thompson, or Piano Adventures books. (If you already have books that you have used on your own r with aother teacher, I am happy to use those as well!) Additionally, I will choose a recital piece applicable to their level that the student will work on for a few weeks/ months at a time to be performed at their first recital performance. Read More

For beginning students I start with basics: learning how to hold the instrument, put it together, etc. Then when that is solid we learn a few notes. From there we go to the Rubank books. At the same time, we start reading music that I find appropriate for them. For adults, it depends on what they want to learn. Popular songs or songs they request. But I also push for technical mastery of the instrument so I push for knowledge of scales and then keep pushing with more challenging/fun pieces. Read More
