I will start off my lessons with the Bastien Piano Basics course. The student will use a lesson book, a performance book, a technique book and a theory book. Once the student has reached a certain level, they will begin lessons in Piano Literature and John Thompson's Modern Course for the Piano. For my beginner students, who are younger, I start off with the Faber series in the Primer levels. After progressing through the first few levels of the series, I then start to introduce solo repertoire depending on the interests of the student. For my older students, we also go through the Faber Adult Piano Adventures book, where we learn the basics of piano along with some fun pieces. first i ask what the student desires to learn . what type of music etc. once i have taught a few songs i ask the student to write a list of songs that they would like to learn. i teach how to find the key that the student sings in and how to transpose the song into that key. if the student does not wish to sing i teach them how the instrument of their choice works . again regardless of the instrument i usually am able to teach a student two songs in an hour lesson . one in four four timing and one in three four timing . there is nothing better than to see the light come on in a students face and see the confidence of ' i can do this ! My first teaching experiences were with my father during solo and ensemble. Having hired me as an accompanist for his students, I found myself rehearsing these students moreso than accompanying them. From that point I felt encouraged to teach and help others perfect their craft. My biggest influences would have to be my past teachers, one of which taught me younger and the other as I matured. I believe that while learning to read and write sheet music, developing technique and feel, and understanding music theory are all important, the most integral part of learning an instrument - as fundamental as it sounds - is to use your ears!
