For beginning students who are children, I typically start with the Faber series, along with accompanying primer theory and lesson book. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. In addition to this, I typically start to add scale exercises to increase strength and speed in one's fingers. On every instrument that I teach I place great importance on fundamentals, especially developing a deep sense of rhythm. I'm a lifelong musician, and have been playing piano for 25 years and violin, guitar, and double bass for over 15 years. I taught K-12 band, orchestra, choir, and general music. During the first lesson I have the student sing (if it is a vocal lesson) their favorite song so I can hear them. After that i use my keyboard and take the student through some excersizes to really home in on that range. I listen for qualities and we discuss the positives and what improvements are needed.
