I start lessons by warming up and doing exercises. For children, I do this in a listen and response setting. Then I will work through school songs or performance pieces, focusing on rhythms first, notes second and musicallity third. These 3 aspects lead to musicial mastery. I would first begin with scales and just focus on getting the correct hand placements. After maybe one or two lessons with focusing on scales, we will then begin with Suzuki books. These books are great for getting the kids more familiar with music and also put their scale practicing to the test. If a student is losing interest in learning I would brainstorm and adapt my teaching style to be more relatable to their learning style. I encourage my students to use skills they learn in our lessons to compose produce original music, perform with friends, perform in local music recitals concerts and simply have fun with what they've learned!
