At whatever the ability level or background, I always try to introduce appropriate solo repertoire to which the student can relate, as well as introducing songs that will aid in teaching proper vocal technique and proper diction. I create my own custom lesson plans based on the needs and goals of each student. Usually, when a student first comes to my studio I listen to them sing a series of exercises and then a song so that I can get a good idea of where they are in their vocal development. I usually begin teaching fundamentals of breath and posture and resonant space in the first few lessons, but then build upon that with specific exercises and repertoire that fits each student's needs.   Music lessons will certainly broaden the students knowledge of music.  It has been proven through scientific study that the study of music will improve the individuals cognitive ability and aids in brain development.  Children who study music develop higher math and problem solving skills.    Age is not a factor as we are never to old to learn.  My students range in age from 5 years old to well into their 70’s, many of whom simply want to improve their skills or recapture the joy of making music.  The study and enjoyment of music can and often becomes a life long adventure whether its just for fun or as a career. I started teaching guitar lessons in 1999 (20 years this year!) Since those days I've gotten two degrees and taught at colleges, and private institutions, as well as high school and middle schools. I've found that combining textbook music instruction along with learning to play some of the music the student is listening to keeps them growing and engaged.
