I made region band every year after that and earned 1st divisions on all my ensembles and solos. I played 1st tenor in the jazz band in High School and started to think I could do this for a long time. I am a positive and encouraging instructor, and emphasize proper technique, music theory, and fundamentals through a variety of musical styles ranging from classical to popular music. My students are all ages (I once had a student start at the age of 70!) and come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. I work with students to help them balance a practice schedule with the rest of their lives. I create my own custom lesson plans based on the needs and goals of each student. Usually, when a student first comes to my studio I listen to them sing a series of exercises and then a song so that I can get a good idea of where they are in their vocal development. I usually begin teaching fundamentals of breath and posture and resonant space in the first few lessons, but then build upon that with specific exercises and repertoire that fits each student's needs. No matter what age, any starting clarinetist needs to understand the fundamentals of the clarinet. Once these fundamentals are acquired, we move on to the basics of reading music and playing the clarinet such as learning the circle of fourths and practicing pieces of music that is from a certain major scale.
