If they mention an area of difficulty we focus on that before making any attempt to play the piece through. I like to be flexible to the students needs and learning style. Ive used many method books often going off what the student is already working on for band or in school. If the student is more advanced I will assign method books such as the Arbans, Clarke, and Charlier books. I also like to incorporate music the student is interested in and wants to learn. I have taught private lessons since before I graduated High School. I've playing in rock bands on drumset, pit orchestra on assorted percussion, marching bands in school and in community settings, and pretty much anything else you can name that has percussion in it. For beginner and novice students I start with discovering where they at playing wise and knowing their instrument. Repertoire wise I believe simple Arban studies and nursery rhymes are all a beginner needs to know to improve their skills. As a student becomes more skilled either Rochut studies or Tyrell's 40 Progressive Studies can really help a student tune their skills. I began teaching in high school, where I taught lessons to the younger students as well as instructed my jazz band in improvisation lessons. I enjoyed problem solving with my students and figuring out the appropriate exercise or explanation to help them get over a particular hurdle.
