I was educated in Sandfields Comprehensive School, Hull then Cardiff Universities, where I studied with renowned Welsh composer Alun Hodinott. I taught in the London School system for several years. I emigrated to the USA in 1975, living and performing in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and then moving to Phoenix in 1989. While reading the notes and rhythms is obviously important, understanding why those notes, rhythms or markings are in the music will help students develop and learn musicianship skills that are often overlooked. I bean teaching after studying drums for four years with Kay Carlson. After years of teaching professionally I developed my own curriculum, based on Kay's lessons what I learned of the Mueller technique from Richard Wilson. My students have gone on to win performance awards, first chair positions other recording phenomenon. Reading drum music is of course my method of communicating with my students. For piano students, I like to use the Alfred courses.  This method is great because they have courses of study for all ages and levels, and students can progress through several courses throughout their study.  For flute/clarinet students, I like to start with either Hal Leonard's Essential Elements or the Rubank methods books.  Once students have moved beyond the basics, I like to introduce solo repertoire that is appropriate for their level.
