For young, beginning students, I typically start with teaching basic playing technique and note reading through simple songs, in order to ensure the student has a grasp of the fundamentals of playing and reading. After this point, I introduce chords and scales and more advanced songs, in order to further develop the student's playing and reading capabilities. I first fell in love with the piano when I was 3 years old, but unfortunately was not able to start taking lessons until I was 11. When I was 16, friends and family started asking me to teach them to play and I developed a love for teaching. At college I decided to study piano teaching to become the best teacher possible. For beginning students, whether they are children or adults, I begin instruction with the Hal Leonard Essential Elements book for Clarinet. Once they have made their way through that book, I move onto the Rubank Beginner or Intermediate Method book, depending on how they have progressed. Around this time, I introduce my younger students to solo repertoire for clarinet. For adult students, I try to gauge their interest and instruct accordingly, whether they are performing in their church or community band, or simply playing for pleasure. Read More

For beginning musicians, I like to start with the very fundamentals of music theory in order to get them comfortable with reading music and understanding what they are doing. Books I have used in the past include the Essential Elements series and the Melodious and Progressive Etude series. I also understand the importance of enjoying what one is playing, so I always urge students find pieces or books for themselves that they are interested in, and incorporate them into my lessons. My teaching style is very laid back and relaxed. As much as possible, I like lessons to be student driven. Allowing the student to take a measure of control over what they are learning, gives them a bit more ownership of and investment in their lessons. I have found this to keep students more interested and be more successful in their learning.
