For children, I draw influence from the organization of the Suzuki method, while still maintaining the emphasis on fun. (Learning TV theme songs, etc) Fundamentals are introduced with memorable examples tailored to the students musical interests. For all other levels of experience, I encourage the student to share with me what exactly it is that they want to learn or need help with. If the student has no idea, I will take over and decide what is missing from the students repetoire, and find the most effective way of tackling these new skills while maintaining fun. I begin all students with the appropiate level of the Alfred's method. If they have had training with another method, I work to blend that method with the Alfred's method during the first month or two of lessons. Once the student has learned the fundamentals, I introduce them to the solo repertoire appropriate for their level and their genre of greatest interest to them. I believe it is important that beginning students who do not know how to read music yet stay out of the books at first. Reading music and trying to hold the instrument correctly, having bow control, and paying attention to tone can be overwhelming. The first few lessons will be book free. Once I feel the student is able to read notes, we will begin in Hal Leonard's Essential Elements which also comes with a CD for easy at home practicing. Read More

My curriculum varies depending on what instrument and style the student is learning. For orchestral string instruments I use the Suzuki method books but also others. The Simandl book for bassist is an amazing resource as well. Modern Reading Text by Louis Bellson is a great book for improving not only your rhythm reading ability but also sight reading.
