With beginning students, I like to use a combination of Alfreds Basic method books. I like the variety it gives students from fundamentals to performance tunes, sight reading and music theory. Students will progress from playing on black keys only, hands separately, to simple five key songs very quickly. We would also explore a few minutes in each lesson on games in music theory on iPad or with manipulatives so they will develop note reading skills. Read More

My approach is focused very much on performance, technicalities, and theory. I believe it is very important for the student to understand how these aspects of playing coincide with each other, and how they are equally essential to music playing. Before giving a student a piece of music to play, I will always play it befoehand and dissect the song into portions that I feel need special attention. I encourage playing with other musicians, and always try to teach the art ofimprovisation, so that the students can learn to play not only by themselves, but with other musicians, using the musicial understanding that it takes to improvise. While studying at the Conductor’s Institute in 1993, I had master classes with Donald Portnoy, Samuel Jones, Larry Newland, and Paul Vermal. I also studied with David Effron and Yuri Bekker at the Miami Music festival I am an active cellist and composer and has had works performed by the Colorado Symphony and in Romania. MY composition, “Theme and Variations for Orchestra” was performed by the South Florida Youth Orchestra in January of 2003, and “In Memoriam” was given its world primer at the University of Miami in 2007. In voice I teach what I learned the Alexander Technique method of singing which focuses on posture and alignment. In piano I learned the Russian method and do teach it but I also teach the popular and Jazz method of fake book reading.
