I have been teaching since I was in Highschool, specifically tutoring younger kids while I was a senior. From there, I helped with sectionals while I was at Baldwin Wallace University. When I started at the University of Akron, I accepted a full Clarinet assistant ship, teaching private lessons to Undergraduate Clarinetists and coaching chamber music. Most of my playing experience came from growing up in the church and playing in various school and extracurricular music groups. I currently play professionally but I enjoy giving back to students what others have given me over the years. I hope to do the same for my students. Every student needs to be approached differently. I take every student at their pace knowing that students can be burned out if they progress too quickly or become bored if they arent challenged. Modern middle and high schoolers can be very busy and it is not productive to give them too much than they can handle. I love seeing my students' pride as they are successful in music. With the student, I work to establish short- and long-term goals and I try to provide incentive for meeting these goals. I have a prize box from which the student can pick something (Small candies, pencils, pens, stickers, bubbles, etc.) when they achieve a short-term goal (i.e. learn 5 songs in February, or something similar). My lessons include a time to practice piano technique as well as time to learn new pieces. I usually recommend R. and N. Faber books for beginners. I also encourage performances and for those, I let students choose works (classical, romantic, contemporary, jazz, or pop) based on skill level and personal interest.
