I usually start with breathing exercises and vocalises for all students. I also use the exercise books Concone and Sieber. After the student has grasped the breathing and the coordination of the vocalises we move on to repertoire that is age appropriate. I encourage my students to sing in Italian as this helps them to acquire a proper technique because Italian uses pure vowels. My teaching experiences have come from my time spent playing in a variety of ensembles in the different colleges that I attended. I was often asked to lead groups in rehearsal and this was where my teaching experiences first began. It started with my colleges Big Band and then with a Saxophone Quartet. Being able to lead a group of musicians and helping them get better everyday was the most fulfilling feeling I got during my time in school and pushed me to try my hand at teaching younger students. I move at whatever pace is appropriate for the particular student. We set long-term goals so they have something they are working towards and are rewarded for hard work. Learning how to play the piano is about so much more than just the piano! The benefits reach far beyond music, helping them with school, self-confidence, and many other aspects in their everyday life. Although we do follow a method book for at least the first few years, we add additional solo music, and I let them choose from several level-appropriate pieces so that they are enjoying what they are learning.
