Through the years I have used teaching methods written by Aaron, Thompson,Schaum, Fletcher and others. My first priority is to get the students to read music proficiently. I like to tailor the lesson specifially with the students skill level, musical goals, and a combination of musical styles that the student enjoys as well as teaching through other literature that I pick out. Fundamentals of music notation sight reading are also incorperated into basic techniques in playing the instrument for beginners. Every drum student is different so I customize each lesson to fit the particular students needs and goals. I always start out with fundamentals and rudiments on the snare drum, Focusing on stick position posture and proper technique. Once these basics are established we move onto a basic drum set method book covering notation, basic drumbeats and drum fills. From there we branch out into various styles of drumming, very often we move to jazz drumming from there as that is usually the first time students are offered to play drum set in their school music program. I make sure that beginner students understand the instrument and start with the proper technique before they can develop bad habits. I try to pick a song or finger exercises for them each lesson as well as a few exercises where they can develop their reading skills. As a student becomes more comfortable with the instrument that is when we can get into more challenging pieces of music as well as different scales and exercises that will help them with their improvising as well as their overall understanding of music.
