My methods differ for each instrument. For piano I will start with Alfred's basic piano course if the student is a beginner. It helps students visualize the basic techniques for sitting and playing the piano in a way that will prevent injury. From there we walk through the book until the student understands how the keys and reading music works. For beginning students I usually start with the Standards of Excellence series of method books. Once the student has grasped the fundamentals of playing, I will introduce solo repertoire students can begin working on to explore aspects of playing such as expression, tuning, phrasing, and different articulations. I completed a Masters Degree in Music (Saxophone Performance) with an emphasis in Jazz Studies in 2016 from the Lamont School of Music and have experience working with underprivileged students with varying income backgrounds. I approach teaching students with an individual needs based curriculum and am mindful of their ability and goals. I began learning cello with the Suzuki method at age five. I believe Suzuki is a great place to start, as it gives learners a chance to practice specific technical and musical skills before moving on to more challenging material. Suzuki also emphasizes listening to professionals perform pieces you're working on, which I believe is important as it allows you to "absorb" good habits.
