All students are assessed in reading music abilities as well as playing ability. Beginners are taken through a friendly course of learning about the instrument. For Classical Guitar I use Segovia Scales, Carulli Preludes, Sagreras, Guiliani Right Hand Studies, my own material from my book and some great compilation books to span the various genres of Classical Music to include the Renaissance Period, Baroque Period and Classic Period. My emphasis is on performance and motivating the student. I set goals for performance at the early stages of study whether it's for family and friends or at an open mic or in church. Without performance as a goal it's hard to motivate the student to practice. I analyze each student's individual learning style whether it's visual or auditory and find ways to help them learn faster and securely. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements and incorporate Position Pieces for Cello by Rick Mooney as they progress to higher levels of difficulty. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance.
