For beginning Flute students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements.  Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their firset recital performance.  For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. I typically will start students with excercises of my own creation. I then will add either Esssential Elements, or Rubanks Elelmentary Method depending on the learning style of the student. we will play duets from Amsdens Celebrated Practice Duets, or Selected Duests for trombone vol. 1 or 2 by H. Voxman. If students are interested in jazz, we will practice with How to Play Jazz and Improvise by Jamey Abersold and play chord changes using irealpro. Read More

I love to see my students accomplish their goals. Therefore I always assign a piece easily within their reach. However, I believe it is important to have higher goals. In keeping with that, once the student is at an appropriate level, I assign a piece that will take a bit more work to master. My teaching experience began with giving private lessons in 1997. My teaching methods and training have further developed through clarinet pedagogy workshops and classes. Performance experience includes formal recitals to complete my undergraduate degree, and playing with ensembles such as the Portland Wind Symphony, Oregon Sinfonietta, Portland Community Wind Band, Northwest Wind Symphony, Opera Theater Oregon, Oregon Symphonic Band, North Coast Symphonic Band, Astoria Music Festival and a variety of small chamber ensembles.
