Hello! I'm a professional, full-time musician.  I studied music and performed through high school and college. Professionally I've been performing for over 30 years, and teaching music privately for over 15 years.  I perform primarily in Arizona, but have performed elsewhere in the U.S., and in Mexico as well. When it comes to strategies regarding teaching I use many methods. I usually will start students understanding the fundamentals of music literacy. In order to achieve the introductory points of this we will work out of a method book like a Hal Leonard Beginner Guitar Method 1. We will understand the importance of understanding how to count rhythms and read pitches correctly. For students who are completely new to guitar, I show them some basic chords, then we find a song they enjoy that utilizes these shapes and we learn it. From there we begin to learn some simple riffs and scales. If they have more experience, I like to show them a practical way to implement music theory into what they already know. If they are already comfortable with many scales, I show them how they are all related to one another through chords and how these can help the see the fretboard in ways they would have never thought of themselves. For beginning students, I would like to start with knowing exactly where they are at with guitar; how to hold it, how to tune it, how strum it. Once the student understands those fundamentals, I like to start on open chords with easy fingerings (usually learning chords is very exciting since you can hear what you are accomplishing).
