The main points I always try bring home is playing a musical instrument is a committment but it doesn't mean its not fun. It should be. I try to get a beginning student to the intermediate one, up and running at playing some of their favorite songs (within reason of ability) quickly so as to keep things moving forward and keep the experience fresh. Over the years I've evolved and developed my own style of teaching that fits the aspiring student's needs. Read More

My teaching experience dates back to college. I began teaching private lessons part time about 12 years ago and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the last 7 years. Routine and regular practice are a great combination to build muscle memory and an instinctual feel for music as well as a connection and passion to your instrument. Incorporating classical and oriental nuances are a great way to enhance rock music and solos, as well as make lessons & practice melodically fun and progressive. Read More

The most important thing for me when it comes to teaching is knowing that my student is progressing but also enjoying their experience overall, another very important factor is overall retention of the information. Every person is different so there is really no cut and dry method of teaching, keeping this in mind the experience for everyone should be unique in a way. By setting routines together Im sure we could come to an agreement on how we could both help each other achieve our goals and succeed. Read More

After college I played professionally in Nashville. Later I spent 3 years traveling full-time through out the United States playing trumpet in several different music groups. Following that I moved back to Nashville and played as a free-lance musician, including as a recording studio musician and contractor. Afterwards, I became a staff musician for Liberty Broadcasting Network. A large Christian Television Network. After 5 years I started my own concert ministry. I traveled again, this time on mostly weekends for the next ten years. Read More

The first step of teaching an instrument to anyone is accurately finding out how experienced they are with the instrument. As far as beginners go, when I was taught piano I used Alfred's Basic Piano library, among other similar books. I felt nothing was forced or unnecessary with those books, and it gives a good opportunity to set a nice goal-oriented pace with moving on up in skill level all the way to the upper intermediate level. For my beginning students I prefer to use The Hal Leonard Complete Edition books. I find this course to be clearly written and easy to understand, and it offers a broad musical foundation to facillitate students as they move easily to higher levels of guitar studies. In addition, I incorporate rhythm reading, ear training and chord studies which I feel are essential to the development of a practical guitarist and musician. Read More
