I recommend Mel Bay’s “Children’s Guitar Method” and Hal Leonard’s “Guitar Method Book 1” for school age children. However, many of my students have decided to concentrate on learning basic theory involving chords and scales to develop ability to play ‘by ear’. For beginners I usually start with a simple melody or riff. I love teaching Painting Black by The Rolling Stones because it is simple to play. Not only that, but it's a song that's easy to identify for most people's ear. I usually take my time allowing the student to learn. One or a few hours are enough to start learning the song. Once I leave, the student's homework is practice as often as possible in order to get some fluency on the instrument. Read More
