I use some custom lesson plans, including some of the following: For piano, I explain the music score to start elementary reading, work on hand and finger positioning, and move to simple scaler melodies. I introduce chord theory and understanding including triads, position changes, an later on sevenths and ninths. Exercises include scales for 1 and the 2 hands, Hanon exercises, and more. There is also an Alfred's adult course for the older students. It really conveys everything from actual performance pieces to theory concepts. Once the basics of the piano are learned (i.e reading music, note names and finger positions etc.), pieces will begin to be played. Following that I moved back to Nashville and played as a free-lance musician, including as a recording studio musician and contractor. I find this course to be clearly written and easy to understand, and it offers a broad musical foundation to facillitate students as they move easily to higher levels of guitar studies.
