I always try to adapt to the student's preferences as far as learning, playing, length of lesson, amount of information, all-around comfortability. Goals are important, but so is acknowledging a student's progress and accomplishment / improvement. I do not believe in negative reinforcement, I'm very patient. Piano is a very difficult instrument to learn, at first it can be extremely overwhelming (especially for a pre-teen) so it's super important to take it one step at a time and have the first couple lessons be laid-back and relaxed, with no pressure. I am a musician hoping to pass on my passion for music to anyone willing to accept it. In 2019, I graduated from Nazareth College in Rochester, NY, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Business. Music found me in middle school when I started playing saxophone and I realized I had a natural talent for it. I was a men-tee to professional gospel saxophonist, Raymond Boyce, when I lived in Atlanta, Georgia. Read More

For beginning children, I typically like to use the Alfred series of beginner books depending on the instrument. I also like the students to rely on their ears just as equally, so the other half of the lesson is usually dedicated to learning music without relying on reading music. Of course, this is all dependent on the student's needs or prior experience. More importantly, I want to teach the student what they are truly interested in with music, and I have plenty of material to discuss if they are unsure of this interest. Read More

I started teaching fifteen years ago when I was getting my Music Education degree in Buffalo. Even though I was training to become a choir director (which I still love doing!) I found teaching one-on-one lessons and building connections was my true calling as a music educator. Since then, I have taught lessons privately in students' homes and online. In addition to my private studio, I have been a collegiate music educator training professional musicians. Read More

It is not necessary, however, to learn chords or grooves specifically from a book for these instruments. Depending on the desired style, there may not be much use of notated music, guitar tabliture, etc. But as already stated, this does not excuse a good foundation in reading music and understanding music theory. For more advanced players (who would most likely be percussionists if working with me, though I am willing to work with any instrument at a more advanced level), we would work out of books I and the student(s) find fitting for their skill level. I teach "Total Piano". Whether you are young or young at heart, a beginner or an advanced player, I will teach the entire instrument. You will learn to read and to play by ear. After all, isn't all music playing by ear? Every style of playing can be taught, whether it is the great classics or picking out the notes you hear off the TV. I teach how to listen and apply what you hear. Read More

While teaching, I create a very friendly and welcome environment. Comfort between the student and teacher is critical in order to progress with technique and repertoire. I open the floor to questions, concerns and truly want to hear what the students perspectives are. With beginner students, the primary focus is on breath management, developing flexibility between ranges, and applying technique to repertoire. For more advanced singers, I am able to help prepare for auditions or performances and focus more on the quality and control of the voice. Read More
