I like to ensure that all of my students have rock-solid foundations, so basics like time, dynamics, and phrasing will be things I constantly return to. But once we have created a strong base to build on, I enjoy letting students work at their own pace that fits their goals. We'll focus on the styles of music that YOU want to play, and won't waste time working on things that aren't important to you. Read More

For beginning students who are children, be able to capture their excitement and build on top of that is very important. 90% of students gave up playing within the first year is because they felt...bored. My method get students quickly be able to play along with songs that they like or hear often in their daily life (ex. radio) then we break down the fundamentals behind the songs and gear the song toward a more classical approach to help students gain a comprehensive understanding, solid foundation and techniques. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Piano or Guitar Lessons for the Young Beginner by Andrew Scott and Gary Turner. The student, even at a young age, learns an introduction to music theory. Each concept is taught in a very methodical and step-by-step approach. As a teacher, I am looking to prepare students for ongoing learning for years to come. The language of music can be very confusing and I am looking for ways to minimize those perplexing times. I am very fortunate to have worked with great teachers, who not only inspired me to play the guitar at a very high level but also to desire to pass on that knowledge to my students. I am very passionate about working with all my students. I strive to make every student comfortable, but gently nudge them to become the best musician they possibly can. I encourage students to get ready and perform on stage and in front of an audience as soon as possible. Read More

My teaching style is focused on helping each student feel at ease, so that they can better learn. I also am strength-based in.my approach. That is, I focus on each individuals strengths in learning. This is in contrast to other teaching styles which are geared toward focusing on an individuals challenges. I have observed that this is the best way to successfully address new musical techniques and concepts. An example might be a child who likes to sing, but is struggling to learn new notes. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonards Essential Elements book, as well a basic understanding of music. Once the student has progressed to have a nice grasp of the fundamentals of music, I usually begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. I also believe in the importance of listening to as many professional recordings as possible of the instrument the student is taking lessons on. Read More
