If they are absolute beginners, I like to give a general layout of the map of the instrument and its parts, how they function, where middle C is, and give them a first piece to learn that encompasses a bit of these ideas, slowly incorporating and building their understanding. I first started in my native Barcelona at the Taller de Msics, where I taught college-level students, jazz guitar, improvisation, and small jazz ensembles.
