Depending upon what area/instrument of music I'm teaching, I use a number of different materials, including (but not limited to) Tonal Harmony (Kostka, et al.), Essential Dictionary of Music Notation, Accent on Achievement, Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, or Rock House Method (McCarthy). The skill level of the student also dictates what resources I'll use. In addition, I believe that the student should have control over his/her development as a musician, so I encourage my students to create a list of songs they wish to learn how to play. Read More

For beginners, I teach them basic exercises and the fundamentals needed to play their instrument. Once they have that down, we can talk about what repertoire to learn. Then, I will teach them the songs they want to learn, as well as any techniques they are curious about. For an intermediate and higher level students, the direction of the lessons is more in their hands. I teach them whatever they want to learn, while also making suggestions for things that they can improve on. Read More

I have played in many venues with many groups in Connecticut, Boston, New York City, and Portland, Oregon. Genres I enjoy include jazz, bossanova, classic rock, blues and pop. Genres I enjoy teaching include most anything that the student wants to learn. If students would like to perform a song in front of other peers, I offer opportunities for that as well in local venues; however, there's no pressure to perform in front of people unless the student wishes to! I use a variety of different pedagogical approaches from Music for the Classroom - Kodaly and Orff methodology, to series like Hal Leonard, the Music Tree (Frances Clark), Piano Adventures (Randall and Nancy Faber), John Thompson and Alfred's Piano Basics. In Voice, my approach is ecclectic but effective, drawing from traditional Classical approaches & vocal building techniques to some of the latest ideas and discoveries on developing a beauty of sound and a solid foundation in the control of the breath. In my lessons, my highest priority is meeting students at their level and making sure that our work is helping them to progress towards theirs goals as a musician/instrumentalist. With a combination of focus on musicality, technique, and developing a musical vocabulary, students will both improve their fundamental skills on their instrument, while also expanding their more general musical understanding, all within a safe, supportive, fun, and encouraging learning environment. I tend to emphasize basics and fundamentals, as most teachers do. Developing facility, dexterity, and muscle memory is very important. I use simple exercises at first. In turn with various other exercises, confidence will gradually develop. Learning to play chords (rhythm guitar), and transitions between them is vital, to almost every style of guitar. Rhythm and awareness of the tempo and meter (beat) is also important, especially if the student will play music with others. Read More
