For beginners, I teach them basic exercises and the fundamentals needed to play their instrument. Once they have that down, we can talk about what repertoire to learn. Then, I will teach them the songs they want to learn, as well as any techniques they are curious about. For an intermediate and higher level students, the direction of the lessons is more in their hands. I teach them whatever they want to learn, while also making suggestions for things that they can improve on. Read More

My teaching experience has showed me that there is no one "correct" approach to learning guitar or any musical instrument for that matter. There are certainly valuable techniques that can be adopted by every student to help them progress, however each student presents their unique personality and tastes in music. In order to help bring out the student's musical "voice" on his or her particular instrument, my approach to teaching will vary. Read More

I've actually written and produced my own music theory book that was in all Borders stores before they closed down. I've learned a few methods and I try to incorporate them all unless the student or parents wants something specific. My method is a method where I can teach 1 thing countless ways. I love my students to learn theory because it is a very important backbone to music. Some people can play instruments without ever really kwoing what they are playing or understand the theory behind it, and I think it holds them back from truely being creative and understanding of music. With my methods students will be able to play from any genre, any book, and hopefully will be able to create their own music. Read More

A principle that I have lived by in the 45 plus years that I have taught, is that I am teaching the STUDENT as an individual with a particular personality, learning style, level of patience, tolerance for making mistakes and openness to trying new things. I do not teach MUSIC; I use it as the vehicle for learning. When a teacher really understands the nature of the student and shows his/her commitment to making every lesson a successful and happy experience for him/her, then the process of learning to play an instrument becomes a mutual and fulfilling experience. My goal as a teacher is to instill a passion for music and encourage each student to become their personal best. I find that it is important to get to know each student's goals so that we can work towards them as a team. I am constantly pushing my students forward, but I make sure to take the time and remind them where they came from. It is easy to get caught up in how far one still has to go to reach their dreams, but I find that if students remember how much progress they have already made, it really helps to motivate them! A practical level of playing is always achievable, keeping in mind one's (typically busy) schedule. So small increments of self practice are necessary, gradually increasing stamina and confidence. Time on instrument is most important, for whatever one plays. Improvisation (playing on the fly) is a part of music that I have always enjoyed and appreciated, especially in a collective setting. It can be simple or highly involved improvisation, but I believe it is an important skill, and can be seen as a stepping stone. Read More

One of my first experiences teaching was in 2010 as a freshmen in college. I would teach my roommate different scales and some basic music theory. I really enjoyed helping him connect the dots and found it made a huge difference in the music we played together. To this day him and i are still close friends and are still making music together 8 years later. Since graduating college in 2014 my time has mostly been spent performing and touring. Read More
