My method is simple, teach the student how to enjoy learning music. Every student learns at a different pace and it is my job to show you the steps you need to get the results you want. For children I have a vast amount of musical games that will make them fall in love with their instruments and music in general. For more advance students, I will focus on your weaknesses, learning repertoire and slowly introduce reading and theory in a simple fun way. Read More

The most rewarding aspect of being a teacher is helping a student truly develop their love for music. It is fundamental that students ask questions, and take their time to learn the material. Music is not a race, its a lifestyle. The goals set for my students are realistic and fair, but I do expect my students to challenge themselves and practice outside of class. I find practice outside of class is where the majority of growth is found. Read More

I am a lifelong student of music. I began playing the guitar at a very young age, 7 years old, and was playing in public by the time I was 12 years old. Around this time I took a correspondence course in Arranging from the then Berklee School of Music, which did eventually also become my alma mater and I even began teaching for my teacher. I have played and performed throughout the new England states as a solo performer and in bands/ensembles, and have had some of my orchestral works performed by the Prague Symphony Orchestra, truly an achievement for a kid who grew up as a rocker. My lessons are organized around a few core elements: fundamentals, technique, note-reading, and repertoire. For all students, grasping the fundamentals of pitch and rhythm is essential, so exercises that continually reinforce these fundamental skills are a typical first order of business for each weekly lesson. Simultaneously, I guide the student through proper posture, form, breathing, and mental preparation. For children, and any adolescents or adults who are truly serious about music, I encourage the development of sight-reading skills for musical literacy. Read More

For beginning students I prefer to use either Alfred's, Mel Bay, or Hal Leonard method books. I generally stay away from method books that use guitar tablature because I find that student will prefer to read the tablature instead of standard musical notation. Tablature is a good way to easily show how guitar parts are played, but is not useful when teaching standard notation, music theory, harmony, etc. In addition to using a method book, I will also teach the student popular songs, which is a great way to start teaching chords and song structure in addition to keeping the lesson fun and the student engaged. My teaching style ranges based on the needs of each student, but I consistently make sure to work towards challenging, but achievable goals with a clear, step by step, and enjoyable path towards them. I do this because I've seen far too many other instructors either overwhelm a student, or bore them to death. Both of which are the two most common reasons for why someone gives up an instrument. With beginners and especially children, I only assume that one's knowledge of the guitar is at best at a basic level. I'll begin by teaching how to hold the instrument as well as posture. Also I'll teach basic strumming patterns for the student to get familiar with the guitar. With students at an intermediate level, I'll ask how much they may already know, or what they would like to learn. Read More
